Safety, Visibility, and Efficiency Controlling dust on military operational areas causes unique challenges, especially those which require intense use site stabilization. Most notable of these problems is when helicopters operate in dusty environments, their rotary blades and engines must be replaced after only one third to one half of their normal life due to the erosion of surfaces caused by airborne soil particles. Dust clouds around military installations also provide the enemy with easily recognizable signatures of strategic operations and impair visibility of both airborne and ground personnel. In addition, safety and health hazards, as well as low morale result from continuous exposure of personnel to extreme dust conditions. Soil-Sement® dust and erosion control agent is used at helipads where Blackhawk military helicopters operate. Conditions at these sites include temperate or desert climate, wind blasts on the surfaces in excess of 100 mph., and surface temperatures of 120°F. |

Photographs in the case history show the difference in dust generation with helicopters hovering over untreated helipads and those treated with Soil-Sement® dust and erosion control agent. The Soil-Sement® surface provides effective dust control for periods ranging from 90 days to 12 months before retreatment is necessary.
