  1. What is EK35®?
EK35 is patented Synthetic Organic Dust Control®; a synthetic organic fluid formulated with a naturally-occurring pitch/rosin blend binder system that works to agglomerate fine silt or clay particles making them larger so they cannot become airborne. It is applied topically without a requirement for addition of water. The advantage is that it is long lasting and is not destroyed by mechanical damage to the surface by heavy or tracked vehicles. EK35 is particularly well suited for applications with heavy equipment or where there is carry-over and spillage. The natural penetration and action of the traffic “work” the EK35 into the surface.

  2. Is EK35 safe for the environment, personnel and equipment?
YES --- it is a safe, highly refined fluid. When used as directed, EK35 has no adverse health effects to people or equipment. Beyond normal hygiene, no special precautions are required. EK35 is approved by the U.S. EPA Environmental Technology Verification Program. It is not a controlled substance under OSHA or WHMIS and has no exposure limits. Extensive acute and chronic toxicity testing data conclusively shows that it does not induce a toxic reaction when it is exposed to skin, eyes or lungs. It is also biodegradable and rigorous quality assurance control at every stage of the manufacturing process ensures the consistency of EK35.

  3. Are all Synthetic Fluids the same?
All synthetic fluids are not the same. Midwest through extensive research and development invented the patented product category Synthetic Organic Dust Control. 'Synthetic' as used in Synthetic Organic Dust Control relates to impact on the environment and is a US EPA definition. The requirements to be 'synthetic' established by the US EPA are based on the environmental tests that a product must meet for sediment toxicity, biodegradability, PAH content, aquatic toxicity and being oil sheen free. Synthetic Organic Dust Control is defined by environmental requirements; synthetic fluid is defined by motor oil requirements. Synthetic fluid is the American Petroleum Institute's (API) requirement for base oil that will be used in motor oils. This API meaning of 'synthetic' has importance to Castrol, Valvoline, Mobil and Quaker State and the performance of their brand name motor oils. The API criteria do not contain environmental meaning. Because of the success of EK35, EnviroKleen®, Diamond Doctor®, and Arena Rx®, attempted knockoffs are starting to make synthetic fluid claims. Analysis of some of these products indicates they do not provide the same chemistry and binding properties.

  4. What is EK35 used for?
EK35 is applied to unpaved roads; haul roads, helicopter landing zones, tank trails, parking lots and unpaved open areas for environmentally safe dust control. EK35 is particularly well suited for applications with heavy equipment or where there is carry-over and spillage.

  5. How does EK35 work?
EK35 is applied and given approximately two weeks to coat and impregnate every soil or aggregate particle. However, you are able to use the area immediately. As the soil or aggregate is conditioned with EK35, you will notice a dark, almost wet look that exists immediately upon application will, over a period of week change to a lighter, dryer look. It is in this process of visible change that you know the EK35 is working its way through and into all of the particles. The EK35 approach to controlling dust is consistent with sound soil and aggregate principles. The binder system in EK35 interlocks and binds loose soil and aggregate with a combination of adhesive and cohesive mechanisms. These systems capture fines as they are generated by traffic and wheel friction and keep them in the surface, preventing them from escaping as dust. The binders also prevent particles from moving apart, leaving open space for water to occupy.

  6. How much EK35 will I need?
A Midwest representative can answer that question by taking into consideration the area you need treated, type of traffic, type of soil and site specific needs for dust control and stabilization. Call 1-800-321-0699 or (330) 456-3121 to find out.

  7. How do I apply EK35?
There are many equipment options available for application of EK35. Hydroseeding systems, either trailer mounted or skid mounted (multi-functional with spray bars, hose reels, and tower guns), scraper mounted water distribution systems, water trucks, and asphalt spreaders will also work well. Centrifugal pumps work best and require less maintenance. Because EK35 is applied neat (without addition of water) metered spray trucks with appropriate sized spray nozzles are required for application. Watering trucks are designed to apply much larger volumes of product and would require modification to apply EK35.

Midwest has developed the E-Sprayer™ System which provides rapid and efficient application of dust suppressant chemicals via a spray bar or fire hose. This unit is self- contained and very effective. Midwest also offers complete Turnkey Delivery and Application Services and Dust Control Service Programs.

  8. What personnel would be required to spray EK35 and is there any special training required?
Midwest can provide all support necessary for application including our personnel operating in secure environments with you. We are also available for engineering support and training as required.

  9. Do I need to add water to dilute EK35 before applying?
EK35 DOES NOT need to be diluted with water. It is not water soluble. It is applied neat.

  10. Will I still need to use water?
NO. EK35 eliminates the need to use water.

  11. How do I clean EK35 out of my equipment after application / use?
Drain lines, pumps and tanks of EK35 after use. Our Synthetic Organic Dust Control products are non-corrosive and non-binding to equipment so no special cleaning is required. Dawn dish soap works best.

  12. Will EK35 freeze during cold, winter weather?
No.  EK35 will not freeze even at -40 degrees F. Therefore it is ideal in cold climates where there exist concerns of temperatures affecting the ability to have dust control.

  13. Will EK35 burn the grass in surrounding areas?
No, generally it will not burn grass. However, if a large amount of EK35 has saturated a grassy area rinsing with water and a small amount of Dawn dish soap is suggested. Otherwise, the EK35 may act to intensify the sun much as tanning oil does.
