The Most Natural, Effective Way to Prevent Fugitive Dust and Gravel Loss on Roads, Runways and Pads
Dust degrades your unpaved road, runway or pad surface, while presenting a health hazard to people and the environment. Traditional dust control measures only make things worse: watering only hastens the destruction of your road surface while increasing your maintenance costs. And chlorides and oil-based products are temporary and can be harmful to the environment.
But with Midwest’s EK35, there is another option: one that will get the job done, with tangible results that you can measure. All while being completely safe for the environment.
The ONLY Organic Dust Control Product to Receive the U.S. EPA’s Environmental Technology Verification
EK35 is a synthetic fluid and binder system that is applied to any heavily-trafficked surface to keep particulate matter confined to the road surface, thereby strengthening and preserving the road, runway or pad
From mining and industrial operations, to township and county unpaved roads, to unpaved runways at rural airports, to military helipads and tank trails, to any other heavily-trafficked surface application – dust from unpaved surfaces is a serious issue. It creates health and environmental concerns, affects quality of life of local communities, degrades road surfaces and vehicles and increases maintenance costs. And traditional methods of dealing with dust, like watering or chlorides, simply don’t work.
So why does a genuine synthetic fluid and binder system work better than any alternative? Because dust control can only effectively happen at the molecular level. Midwest has perfected the process of molecular control. By engineering our synthetic fluid and binder system in the lab, we ensure that our molecules are micro-sized and uniform in shape. Unlike alternative products, which have odd-shaped molecules, this creates even penetration while consistently coating each particle of soil.
How it works:
EK35’s unique binding system sets it apart from all alternatives. First, the EK35 synthetic carrier fluid delivers the binder into voids in the soil and aggregate. As the EK35 fluid penetrates the surface, it uniformly coats all of the soil or aggregate particles with its adhesive agent. The binder then physically bonds permanently to the particles as a result of a chemical reaction. This adhesion to each soil or aggregate partical, and then the binding of all separate particles together, prevents dust emissions and fines loss. These fines (called fugitive dust when they come loose and drift away from the road surface) are retained where they are necessary, keeping larger aggregate in place. Over time, traffic loading further tightens the surface using cohesion and adhesion mechanisms, thus increasing the CBR value, performance and longevity of the road, runway or pad.
All of these factors combine to create a product that removes a common source of significant health risk to people while reducing water usage by 100%, the need for grading by 75% and dust by up to 95%.
EK35 Strengthens and Preserves Your Unpaved Road, Runway or Pad Surface
- Protects the health of local communities and residents, anyone who uses the road, area wildlife and vegetation and surrounding water sources from the contaminating effects of dust
- Does not undergo or require a curing process and can be exposed to traffic immediately after application
- Creates pavement-like surface, enhanced by traffic
- Can be topically applied or blended into the upper 4-6” for increased longevity and performance
- Can be reworked without reapplication
- Does not evaporate, migrate or leach out of the surface
- Performs well at extreme temperatures
- Can be stored at temperatures down to -50° F
- Works with all types of soils and aggregates
- Reduces need for grading, by minimizing surface deterioration and aggregate loss, saving on maintenance costs
- Eliminates water usage, saving money as well as the time and resources
- Reduces damage to vehicles from loose aggregate
Performance and Environmental Certifications
At Midwest, we don’t just make claims. We prove them. We are dedicated to demonstrating our products’ quality and performance through extensive 3rd-party testing. Below, see a list of certifications held by EK35, as well as independent test reports, case studies and other documents proving EK35’s performance.
U.S. EPA Environmental Technology Verification
Test data verifies that EK35 is the only synthetic fluid that is safe for the environment and people and is effective in suppressing PM10 and PM2.5 levels.

Clean Water Act and National Pollution Discharge Elimination System
The NPDES permit program, created in 1972 by the Clean Water Act (CWA), helps address water pollution by regulating point sources that discharge pollutants to waters of the United States.
EK35 meets criteria for the term synthetic, as established by the EPA, for sediment toxicity, biodegradability, PAH content, aquatic toxicity and being oil-sheen free.
