Resin Binder Dust Suppressant

BioSoyl Plus® combines penetrating bio-based properties with strong binding action for dust-free unpaved roads. Formulated with renewable resources enhanced to control dust, BioSoyl Plus penetrates below the road surfact to bond with roadbed materials while the resin binder consolidates surface aggregate, locks it in place and enhances compaction at the surface. BioSoyl Plus-treated roads stand up to heavy traffic on landfill, military, construction and community roads.

Combines Penetrating Bio-Based Properties with Strong Binding for Dust-Free Unpaved Surfaces

BioSoyl Plus is a bio-based dust suppressant enhanced with a resin binder for superior performance and binding. The chemistry of BioSoyl Plus is designed to allow for penetration of compacted surfaces while the chemically reactive binder works to lock fines to the surface, preventing them from becoming airborne. When this type of binder comes into contact with soil particles, it forms insoluble compounds that are extremely viscous and exist as waxy solids.

BioSoyl Plus comes in a concentrated form that can be neat or diluted 1:1 up to 5:1 (water : concentrate) prior to application. There is no cure time required for BioSoyl Plus and the treated surface can be immediately exposed to traffic following the application. In concentrated form, BioSoyl Plus can be stored at temperatures as low as 40oF and as high as 130oF.

As an alternative to corrosive chlorides and hazardous petroleum-based products, the non-toxic BioSoyl Plus offers a high performing, long-lasting solution that can stand up to the demands of heavy traffic.

Demonstrated Performance

The United States Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) was recently tasked by the Defense Logistics Agency – Aviation to evaluate green, non-corrosive, high-performing dust suppressant technologies for developing updates and changes to dust manuals and field manuals used by the Army and Department of Defense. ERDC conducted a laboratory and field study to evaluate the effectiveness of bio-based, green dust suppressants based on their ability to mitigate dust and limit corrosion. BioSoyl Plus was one of the 16 products evaluated.


Laboratory Evaluation

All 16 products were evaluated in the lab based on their performance in three tests:

  • Air impingement (mass loss)
  • Air impingement (max dust concentration)
  • Portable In Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL)

Based on the results of the laboratory testing, five products were selected for additional field testing. BioSoyl Plus was one of the five products selected.

Field Evaluation

The top 5 performing products in the laboratory evaluation were chosen for field testing. Each product was applied to a 500’ x 20’ test section and the performance was evaluated after 30, 60 and 90 days following the application. Stationary dust collectors, stationary dust monitors, mobile dust monitors and PI-SWERL testing was used to evaluate the field performance of each product.

Analysis of Results

An objective ranking system was devised based on quantitative measurements with each of the 12 test parameter equally weighed and normalized by dividing the value by the water control (lab testing) and pre-test control value (field testing). Based on the objective and thorough evaluation, the ERDC report concludes that “the best performing dust palliative is BioSoyl Plus.”
